- Long ago there were schools called hedge school. The Catholics could have no schools or no Catholics could be teachers so the people had schools called hedge schools. After the farmer had let out his animals from the byre the teacher came there with his children to teach for the day. The children sat on the floor, the writing was on a slate and the pencil(continues on next page)
