- Fairy Forts
Gortalassa Fort
There is a fort in the townland of Gortalassa, Firies. It is in Jerry Kerrsk's land. There is a fence of earth around it. In the centre of this fort there is an entrance-hole. Over this entrance there is a big stone. The weight of the stone is about twenty tons. There is another fort about a half a mile from it. They are in the same townland. The two forts are connected by an under-ground tunnel. It is built of flags. A person could travel from one fort to the other. There is supposed to be a large crock of gold hidden in some one of those forts by the Danes retreating from Dromore fort. I heard Ned Day, Currens, Farranfore say that one night he was snaring rabbits in the fort field. It was about twelve o'clock in the night. He felt something hitting him.
