  1. Hedge schools existed in my district long ago. There was one in Gurteen and one in Tornagee. The pupils were taught in a little house. They were not taught in ordinary houses. The teachers had no special house of their own near them. The pupils in turns had to bring the teachers to the houses at night. There wasn't any Irish taught. Arithmetic, Catechism and English were the most subjects taught. The pupils wrote in a copy with a pencil. They had slates also. The teachers remained a long time in a district. One teacher remained in it as long as she lived.
