  1. The mass-bush beside a road in Kilmacow (already referred) gave rise to two stories. A road contractor that is a person who had a contract to keep a certain amount of public road in repair named for Reilly Costelloe was working on the road near the Mass-bush. A man named John Elliot a stipendiary magistrate who lived in house just outside the parish came along on horseback. He was going to the hunt. Costelloe or Reilly was spreading stones on the road but left a path for horses to pass. The horse was making his way along this path. This brought rider & horse directly under the mass-bush. The top-hat was knocked off Elliot as he passed under the mass bush. He had struck it against an overhanging bough. He became very angry & shouted at Costelloe to come & cut down the bough
