   one of them went down to shut it, and had no sooner gone to bed than they all heard the door opening again. Again one of them shut it, and again it opened. The end was - that they got up, and remained up until word came to them that Mickey was drowned. It is often when a person dies that he is seen in some other place - the person seeing him not knowing that he is dead. The day my father - God be with him - died (in Co. Sligo where I come from) my father-in-law said he saw through a window a strange man walking with my husband out in the field, or going across the yard I think. When my husband was questioned, he met no stranger at all that day; and the description given of the stranger would describe my father as to height, etc. The bad news (of his death) came soon after.

2. Note on Great Famine

   Some people thought that this famine was a scourge from God: and that some people used potatoes sometimes as stones, to fire at each other - surely a wrong way to use food God has given. Scarcely a fish could be got in the rivers either during this period, so some thought and said it was all "The Will of God."
