- Cows are often named or christened according to their appearances, or from who they were bought: Maol cow or Maoilín, Crumbledy (crooked horns) the Ganzy cow, Dolly, the strawberry (red & white), the Magpie. (black and white) etc. also a Martin if promised to St Martin (See page 6)When driving cattle out it is usual to say "Hi! Hi!" or "Hypoo!" and when trying to get a cow into the house you'd say "paoí! paoí"To call a horse or an ass in you'd say "pshe! pshe!."
To call in a pig or pigs say "hurais! hurais! bac! bac!"
To call in sheep say "Yope! yope!" or baa!
Call a goat her name, as "Bessie! Bessie!" or "Jin! Jin!"
"Suck! suck!" is the call for calves.
