They said a great many things more,
They frightened the old woman so much
That she said "Jack Murphy, come out of your shore."
Jack had been coming along with her
And when he saw the red-coated crew,
He jumped into a thicket for shelter,
What else could a poor old man do.
But when he heard his wife call upon him,
As he stood in the thicket close by,
Saying "Jack Murphy, come out to your Nancy,
Your're fitter to die now than I."
He jumped out of his place of concealment
Confronted the red-coated band,
And in haughty defiance before them
He stood with a beads in his hand.
Said Jack "Now, what do you want with me?
I tell you I do you defy,
I'll show you I am a true patriot,
Even though on this spot I should die."
Said one of those hell-hounds unto him,
"We want you this old Mass-house to burn,
And if you comply with our wishes
You'll have good times in return,
You'll have plenty of gold when you want it,
