- (continued from previous page)houses that were in the district formerly. They were built with yellow clay & big stones & had very small windows with one pane of glass which could not be opened or shut.
The roofs were thatched with rushes & straw & little switches which were called scollops.
The bed was in the kitchen.
An old would that lived at the side of Delaney's Mill used to have a fire in the middle of the floor. A hole in the roof let the smoke out. - The old houses were made of clay with rushes in between to keep the walls together.

- Flat-roofed round houses made of clay were used long ago. A strong iron bar, from one side to another, kept the house together.
