  1. I live in the town and I seldom hear fireside stories but this one I did hear
    Thomas Doran was the son of a fashionable tailor in this town. He became wild in his youth and took to trampling. A Christie minstrel troupe nicknamed him "Schooner Doran" because he could travel as fast as a slowly ridden bicycle. His greatest walk was from Carrickmacross through Slane to Dublin in 10½ hours. He was known far and near as one who could keep on sight over a long distance of a trotting horse.
    He died 12 years ago.
    It was (fourty) Irish miles from Carrickmacross to Dublin.
