basket on a stool and they ate off it. It not out of mugs they drank, but out of wooden vessels called "noggins". For the supper they ate oat - meal porridge.
When they had not milk plentiful, they made what was called sowins. This was the juice of oat - meal placed in water, and left for some time to sour.
Boxty is made by peeling and cleaning the eyes of a number of potatoes. After this, you put the grated portion into a clean cloth and squeeze it. You next get some boiled potatoes and peel them. Mash the boiled potatoes, and squeezed potatoes with little salt, and as much flour as will dry them, make the mixture into small cakes, boil from half to three - quarters of an hour in sufficent water to cover the cakes. Place a plate underneath them, to prevent them from burning.
