- (continued from previous page)island. It is hidden under a huge big stone, and it is of very rich value. Many people have made attempts to go and look for it, but nobody has ever succeeded. One poor fisherman named "Liam Báróid" set out one bright moonlight night armed with a pick-axe and crowbar. He took his boat and made for the spot. No sooner had he anchored his boat, when he looked about him and saw an enormous cat sitting on top of the stone under which the gold is hidden. His eyes were like two lights in his head and his legs were like big barrels. He fled in terror and he never tried the same again, neither would he dare pass the island or do any more fishing.
There is a man in my district by the name of "Florence O'Donovan" who, as he was one day cutting turf in a bog found a casket. It was about the size of a bucket and made of timber on the outside. Inside this it was lined with strong leather, and enclosed in the leather was another little leather purse, fastened at each end by strong thongs. This purse contained parchment which was as safe as the first day it was put there. It was a bit soiled from the bog-water and it is thought to have been there for some hundred of years.- Collector
