    one possessed. This was usually a churn barrel of the revolving style with an axis and handle at each end. Two persons either male or female usually worked at the barrel but if it was a small one it could be revolved by one person. It was always a custom for any person who entered during the churning to turn the barrel for a few revolutions as there was a somewhat superstitious notion then prevailing that if he didn't the butter may not collect or he may take it away with him. There was usually a little vent hole at one end of the barrel which was closed by a little plug of timber which was pulled out often to give air to the cream.
