It was possible to bring forth twenty or thirty pounds from the cream in about a half-hour. When the butter was made the buttermilk was was left flow out through a narrow little outlet and the butter when it had been washed with cold water was taken out by the hand or with a butter spade. Then it was salted and placed in a wooden vessel called a firkin ready for market.
