    the former case the "s" loses its natural sound and becomes "h" and this change has occured to the English name Severn applied to the river which for many centuries was known by the Welsh title of Haren. During the Roman occupation of Englans the "s" does not appear to have been aspirated, and this is evident from the word "Sabrina" which is found in Milton:-
    "There is a gentle nymph
    not far from hence,
    That with moist care sways
    the smooth Severn,
    Sabrina is her name, a virgin pure."
