- About 6 or 7 miles north of Macroom is Mushera Mountain, 2133 feet high. In the side of this mountain is a pass called Máma.The road north and south of this is a very lonely, and has a very eerie name in the neighbourhood. There are very few houses and the locality is very wild and remote.
It is on the route between Ballinagree Donoughmore & to Millstreet, and is travelled by parties going to and returning from fairs etc. Several cases of horsemen having been found dead have occurred within living memory, and there is a weird story told about the road on the north (Moulnahorna) side facing for Macroom.
It is related that in the olden times this road was frequented after dark by a witch or old hag called Cailleach Mháma, and woe betide the lone traveller who had to pass the way when night had fallen.
Her method of dispatching her victims had the merit of originality, at least as far the stories of this kind(continues on next page)- Collector
