- There are four forges in the parish. The forges are:- Aherla, Farran, Crookstown, and Currihaly.
The smiths of Aherla forge are Michael Murphy and son. Mr. Murphy is better known as "Firelock".
Mr. Murphy's grandfather was a smith. He repaired a gun called "Firelock" for the Fenians.
Aherla forge is about fifty yards south of Aherla village. It is on the road-side near a stream.
Aherla forge is built of stone and mortar. It has a timber roof. It has no special kind of door. There is one fireplace within.The fire place is a small room raised about four feet off the ground. There is a big room under the fire place. Slack coal is kept in it.
