- Local Marriage CustomsMarriage mostly takes place during Shrove in my district and also in the surrounding districts. May is the month during which it is considered unlucky to marry. Wednesday, Monday and Friday are days which are also thought unlucky to marry.Matches are not so frequently made locally now. Money is some times given as dowry. Stock and goods are also given with the dowry. Long ago strawboys did visit the houses, but this custom has now completely died out. Marriage also took place in the houses in olden times.
