- A little to the south-east of Greenmount quay there is a slippery rock. This rock has been of great interest to people because Mass was celebrated on it in the Penal days. Mr Taylor the landlord of the lands of Greenmount lived in the house close by. This landlord kept a huge staff of servants to work inside and outside his house. He also kept a pack of dogs and horses for hunting. Many old horses or other animals were sold to this landlord for feeding his dog's.
At this time the men were forbidden to go to Mass. One day a priest came and asked Mr Taylor's permission to say Mass for the men in the stables. He refused the priests request; the priest was very angry and so he went down to the hill near the sea and celebrated Mass on this rock. This rock never goes dry; water constantly runs over it and so it is called "The Slippery Rock" and sometimes the "The Mass Rock".
