- (ar lean ón leathanach roimhe)paid a fee of two shillings for a quarter, a dancing
master's quarter was reckoned as three weeks duration.
While the school was being held. the teachers went
usually to the homes of their pupils in turn at night.
Where the scholars and neighbours assembled for a
night's enjoyment.
At the end of the dancing master's quarter or session
there was held what was called a "benefit,' at which
the pupils and parents assembled, and contributed
toward defraying the expenses of the musician, who
accompanied the dancing master.
At the benefit, a large kitchin table was prepared
and covered with a layer of soap. The elder members
gave an exhibition by dancing jigs, reels, hornpipes.
The younger members also gave an exhibition of steps
learned at their session.
The elder members usually wore a pair of light boots,
the uppers of which were made from dog's skin
tanned by a process of their own, (information on this
art is not available), each dancer was very proud of
his dancing shoes, and were only worn on rare occasions.
In each farm house, there was usually a large flag
to be found, placed in front of the hearth, and on
this flag the steps were usually danced.
The expression "Take the flag" was a common expression
and survives to this day.(leanann ar an chéad leathanach eile)- Bailitheoir
