When Con Ned's (Fitzgerald) wife died in Kiskeam my mother and the rest of the Mount Cain women went there. Con Ned's wife was a Hickey woman and a first cousin of my mother's. The women were sitting in the wake room and it was a grand moonlight night outside. Someone said that it would be as well to close the shutters. And of course when the person spoke about the window they all looked towards the window. At that moment they all saw horse - a white one - pass the window. There was a boy sitting on the saddle and a woman on the cúlóg behind him. The woman had a white scarf or handkerchief on her head and she wore a hood-cloak with the hood over the handkerchief. Her mother thought it was her aunt Nell (who was also aunt of the dead woman) and more of the woman thought so too. and they all settled themselves for a good cry when "Nell" would come in. They waited and waited but no one came in. Some people went out and enquired of people who were outside the door if they knew where the horse and riders had gone but the(continues on next page)- Collector
