- (continued from previous page)school was carried on in the open, but in bad weather they kept in-doors, each pupil seated on a large stone. The fuel for the fire was supplied by the pupils bringing a sod of turf every morning.
- OLD SCHOOLSFrom what we hear from old people these schools were held in the farmer’s kitchen and the children from the district came to be taught reading and writing all through Irish. They were also taught several other languages. They loved the Irish language and the old Irish customs. The writing was done on a slate and polished wood and they wrote with what was called a “cudgel”.
