  2. OLD SCHOOLS
    From what we hear from old people these schools were held in the farmer’s kitchen and the children from the district came to be taught reading and writing all through Irish. They were also taught several other languages. They loved the Irish language and the old Irish customs. The writing was done on a slate and polished wood and they wrote with what was called a “cudgel”.
    In winter time, the children brought a sod of turf or a log of wood to keep a fire. In summer
