- In olden days, the people ground their own flour with a hand-mill or quern made of dressed limestone. The flour was made from wheat, oats and barley. The well-to-dopeople ate bread made of wheaten flour.Bread was baked on a griddle, placed on the red turf ashes. Bread made from potatoes was also eaten.
