    in all cases.
    In large farms another kind was used called the barrel churn. The ends of the barrel rested on a frame, and the barrel was made to revolve by handles, one fixed at each end. There was a plug for admitting air. This plug was removed from time to time according as occasion required. In the middle of the barrel there was an opening for putting in the cream, and for taking out the butter and buttermilk. This opening was also used in the cleaning of the churn.
    A Churn of this kind was in use in our home. The frame is yet in fairly good order, but the barrel has disappeared.
