- (continued from previous page)known as Carraig An Aifrinn where mass used be celebrated unknown to the "authorities" during the penal days. On the mountain side a rough altar is cut in the rock. There are three rough steps leading up to the Altar. A part of this mountain is known as the priest's mountain. On it there are mounds like graves and stones which look as if they were at one time "head stones".On the other (south) side of the river Blackwater, near the village of Ballyhooley, Fermoy, Co Cork lived a priest who used to celebrate mass on Carraig Na Aifrinn on "the Priest's Mountain". A bad protestant family named Grimes, who were priest hunters, plotted to kill the priest and a fool employed in the house heard them. The priest-hunters went round to cross the river by the bridge - a long journey, but the fool ran straight to the river and said -
"River, river dont drown the fool for he wants to save the priest."
So he walked across the river quite dry & saved the priest.- Collector
