    On St. John's night - 23rd June - we have great sport lighting the fires to honour the saint. They look lovely in the darkness, especially when we see the Clare fires reflected on the Shannon.
    I forgot to mention one of the games which is played everywhere on Halloween night, that is roasting beans. We get beans, we put them in pairs on the range to stand for the boys and girls whom we know to be friendly. If the two beans remain together all the time until they are roasted, the pair will be faithful to each other, and will get married, but if one jumps away from the other, as they usually do, they will be separated.
