- Local Heroes.Strong man - Sean O'Broin - locally reputed to be the strongest man in Ireland native of Ballagh, Abbeyfeale.Sean was at the fair of glin, drank too much. The reqward of the Knight of glin (John Francis Fitzgerald) put him in the Parish stocks in Glin).When Sean recovered from the drinking bout he tore up the stocks and brought them on his back to Athea. These were never replaced and so the stocks fell into disuse.John O'Connor, clash, saw Sean O'Broin lifting a pig of 2 cwt wt. by one hind leg clear over the horse-nail.James Moran, dead, born about
90 yrs. ago. Native of Athea.When in his prime he was able to mow an acre of hay in 1 day, began at dawn, had potatoes and milk for dinner, and finished work at nightfall.John O'Connor, Clash was a great walker. he walked form Clash, Athea to Limk. and returned on the same day.
