- St. Ita is the patron Saint of Limerick. The remains of her Convent are still to be seen at Killeedy about six miles from Newcastle West. She was born in Desi district in the year 470 A.D. Her Christian name was Dorothea. But her name in religion was Ita.From the Baptismal Font she was filled with the Holy Ghost and she always thirsted for purity. Her father was of noble origin and wished her marry a English Chieftain. But Ita would not hear of it as she wished to enter religion. She used to say " let my father alone and I'll pray for him ". She travelled westward and beneath the shade of Sliab Luacra she built her Church.A local ruler offered her a plot of land but she would accept only two acres, and there she built her Convent. She taught St. Brendan while he was young. Ita had knowledge of the other(continues on next page)
