    turf daily. He was a big strong man dressed in blue clothes, white hat and socks in need of repair. Beside teaching this man had to read & write letters, survey their land & act as a lawyer.
    One advantage they had in Summer was that they had plenty fresh air. They listened attentively to his instructions & imbibed every word of his teaching.
    I heard John Lane's father tell of the days he visited the old school with a slate under his arm. Only very few books were used and black boards and desks were unheard of. Even when Jack Frost sheeted the ground in grey they visited this old school barefoot.
    When the parents noticed that one member of the family was very smart he was allowed to do no work & was better clothed than the other children. When he thought he had the master drained of his knowledge he had a contest in verse with him &
