- The houses people had to live in before, were made of mud. They had no chimneys or windows. Instead, of chimneys they had a hole in the top of the roof to let out the smoke. They had the fire in the middle of the floor. THey had netted wire instead of glass for the windows. There is still to be seen in Joseph Newman's farm in Coolaboy, the remains of an old mud house in which he was born.
