  1. The nearest Hedge School was in Charleville, and it was situated on the road to Cork. Is was conducted by Protestant Teachers and the children were supposed to be fed there also. This was done to spread the protestant religion.
    At one time an inspector made a report on this school, and its record was very bad.
    As to the teachers in the hedge schools, they were very intelligent and learned.
    The old hedge schools, were almost found in every parish. and its teachers were known as poor scholars.
    These teachers had acquired their knowledge from more eminent men, who held a school in some part of the country. These teachers in the old hedge schools were from
