- 27. The Boy who Played Cards. In the olden days a boy was keen on playing cards. His mother stopped him from doing it for a week. His mother died, and he went playing cards again.
One night, as he was going to the card-house, he saw a thing in front of him. It asked him where he was going, and he told it. It disappeared immediately. He continued his journey. He saw a hand pointing to a hole in the ditch. He went over, and drew out a human skull. He took it to the chapel, and buried it, and when he was coming home from the card-house he was followed by a blackdog. He ran for his life, and jumped the gate at his own house, but the thing touched him and he fell dead.
That's what he got for his card-playing.Told to Dick O'Donnell,
