  1. The potato-crop.
    Potatoes are grown on my farm. An acre of land is sown, under potatoes each year. The amount varies when the season is wet.
    My father ploughs the garden and opens the drills. The ground is not manured before being turned up. The potatoes are sown in ridges if the ground is being turned up for the first time. The potatoes are sown in drills in the garden is old. The drills are high and narrow. They are made with a plough. A plough is used if the garden is big but if the garden is small a spade is used. Wooden ploughs were used long ago. There is only one left in this district. Spades are bought in a shop. The seed potatoes are cut. There must be an eye in every sciollan, because out of the eye the stalk grows.
    Farmers help one another by lending horses, and ploughs when needed.
