- About a hundred years ago there was a lot of oats wheat and rye grown in Mungret. All the houses were then thatched and the straw came in very handy. When the rafters were put (of) on the house it was then covered with branches and then with scraws. it was not every one was able to put the first coat of thatch on. There was a special spike of iron which they called a needle(continues on next page)
