  1. Mrs Ryan Ballyrourke my father's grandmother was married in the year of the famine. Her son Timothy Ryan 91, who is still alive was born the year of the famine.
    The year '45 potatoes were a splendid crop and they were so plentiful that they healed them up in the side of the ditch and didn't think it worth their while to bring them in.
    In '46 the potatoes all blackened, crops in general failed with the exception of some wheat which was plentiful enough income places.
    But as the Harvest was gathered in and threshed with a Flail in the barn The British Government paid fabulous prices for the wheat and shipped it out of the country, except in the cases of big ranchers and Land Lords who could afford to keep their stuff.
    My father Thomas Guilfoyle often heard his grandmother the said Mrs Ryan talk about these hard times and the sickness and disease that followed the famine.
    Inafter years she couldn't even endure to see single potato thrown around.
