  1. Hedge schools exoisted in this district long ago. The pupils were seated under a hedge growing on a stone wall. Some of the pupils brought thick pieces with them on which they sat. and others sat on stones. The teachers were strangers. The children were taught in the farmers' houses on wet days. The farmers had little presses in the walls in which the teachers slept. Some rich farmers who had children going to school gave the teachers a few pounds. Irish was mostly the important subject they had to learn. The subjects taught were Grammar, Cathechism and Irish. Writing was done on slate. The children were all seated around the master.
