  1. Many customs were practiced by the people, on May Day in Ireland long ago, some of them were.
    No one was allowed to carry a sod out of the fire or to borrow fire in any way.
    No strange hand was permitted to milk a cow. for if the first can was filled in the name of the devil, there would be no milk for the family on that year.
    Young men used to carry home with them a branch of a sacred tree to bring good luck to the family for the year.
    Cattle were driven through hot cinders.
