    the country boys at the races had a row and a big fight ensued. The soldiers took off their belts and used them as weapons, the civilians pulled up the tent poles of the several tent owners on the race course and used these formidable clubs as weapons with which to repel the military onslaught. A battle royal resulted, the civilians proved too many for the army and chased the soldiers back from Aughal and through the streets of Templemore up even to the very precincts of the Military Barracks. I used to hear my dear mother (R.I.P.) say that she was alone in our house with myself, a boy of two years and my brother James (R.I.P.) a baby in arms when some soldiers rushed in by the
