- About six miles from Clashbeg there is a castle named Coolquil in which a treasure was supposed to have been hidden by a Danish Chieftain. Many years ago a peasant in the neighbourhood had a dream in which he was directed to go to a certain part of the castle and to dig beneath a large stone and underneath this he would find the treasure, but he would have to battle with a spirit which would appear in the form of an officer having a sword in one hand and accompanied by a wolf-hound. To overcome his difficulties he was instructed to cut a branch from a witch-hazel and attack the treasure-guardian. On the first stroke of his magic wand the soldier and dog would disappear and in their place he would find such a store of wealth as he had never dreamed of. He set off one summer night to seek his fortune. Pick and spade soon uncovered a large slab which required all his efforts to lift it on its edge. When this was done he(continues on next page)
