  1. The sign of the Cross was made (while the Three Divine Persons were invoked) with the burnt end of a hazel stick on the left shoulder of every man and boy in the house. If a member of the family were named Patrick it fell on him to perform the rite. Girls wore crosses made of cardboard and covered with various coloured ribbons.
