  1. People long ago used to put a cross with a burnt stick on the eggs before putting them under a hen, so that the chickens would have cucks on them. The cucks consist of a bunch of feathers over the chicken's head.

  2. When putting eggs to hatch, people usually put a piece of iron or a horse shoe in the nest or put the hen hatching in a metal pot in case lightning would harm the eggs.
