- Long ago, it was an old custom for poor beggar women to be at the Church gate on a wedding day where they collected more than a pound if it were a good wedding. It was thought to be unlucky to get married in May. Mondays and Fridays were unlucky for marriage.Monday for health,

Friday for losses,
