Jim Godfrey Ayle also informs me that his Grandfather often went as Spalpeen digging potatoes to Cashel.

Jim Godfrey Ayle also informed me that his grandfather often went as Spalpeen digging potatoes to Cashel.
When the day’s work was over the men were given a piece of a candle and they had to switch corn on a barn till the candle was wasted.
After this, he tells me, they attended a night school at which his grandfather learned to read and write Irish.
This he says was “ in the bad time” and the weekly wage was 2/-.
