There is a fair held in Spancilhill once a year. A good lot of the farmers from this district go to it. - The occupants of this locality observe many old customs.
On Christmas night as in all other parts of Ireland it is an old custom for the people to light a candle in each window of the house.
Before the children go to bed on Christmas night they hang up their stockings as they expect Santa Claus will come during the night and bring them many gifts.
On that night also before the woman of the house goes to bed she leaves a meal on the table and it is an old custom that the man of the house should never bolt the door on Christmas night.
Of course the young boys of the locality still keep up the old custom on St Stephens day by dressing up in funny fashions and going out “hunting the wren”.
In every Catholic home on the first of Febuary there is a little cross put up on the ceiling(continues on next page)- Collector
