Tommy Mc Guney, Courtbane, Dundalk could take a 28 stone sack, bend it across his knee and hoist it over his shoulder. (Lived about 1800).
Challenge between himself & Manus Kirke, (Bally binaby, Dundalk) who was a great stone-thrower, in Courtbane at a place called the Shancoort.
Mc Guney won the weight-lifting
Kirke won the weight-throwing - Threw the ½ cwt. over 30 feet. Stone was there for years.Great Runners: Philip the Racer ran from Courtbane to Sluve Gullion mountain (about 8 miles) evading arrest - six policement after him - could not be caught.(continues on next page)- Informant
