- Scarlet StreetLong ago when Cromwell came to Drogheda, the inhabitants ran up Peter's Street. Cromwell's men however overtook them and slew many of them. Many of them sought refuge in the church on the top of the hill St Peter's Church but in vain. Cromwell;s men followed them and killed every man woman and child. He then marched on to Scarlet St. where he slew that many that the St. ran red with blood. From that day to this the people called Scarlet St.
