  1. The old people in this district had lovely ancient prayers.
Here is a prayer which my mother taught to me when I was young:
Here I lie down to sleep
I give my soul to God to keep.
    Any evil come to me
    Blessed Lady waken me.
There are four corners around my bed
There are four angels round me spread,
    Mathew, Mark, Luke and John
God bless the bed that I lie on.
    Open the gates of Heaven,
    Shut the gates of Hell.
    Let this poor soul in
And go to rest in peace. Amen.
This prayer is to be said at night.

As I lie on my bed to sleep
I give my soul to God to keep
    Waken now, or waken never
