  1. (continued from previous page)
    And tho' am as poor as a bard,
    I show independence in want.
    Some hint, "that my muse is severe,
    And always of satire too fond -"
    'Tis true, she lays villianies bare,
    But Justice she goes not beyond.
    She never drew tears from the eye
    Of virture, or innocence pure;
    Nor studied to flatter, nor lie,
    Place, plaudit, or pelf to procure.
    She gives to oppression enough,
    Nor into scurrility runs;
    And tho' in expressions oft rough,
    She still personalities shuns.
    Fair Virtue, when injured, defends
    Or vices or follies expose,
    Which gains her but very few friends
    But numbers of rancorous foes!
    And be her success good or ill,
    That course she intends to pursue;
    And trusts, truth and honesty still,
    Such foes in the end will subdue.
