- When my Grannie lived at home in Oldcourt she used to make rush candles. The first thing she used to do was to go to the bog and pull rushes and peel them to a small skin.
Then she would get mutton fat from the butcher and melt the mutton fat on a grisad. Then dip the rush in the grease and leave it on a board to stiffen.
The thing for holding the candle is a piece of a block with a stick standing up about two feet long and a bit of iron something like pincers for holding the candle.- Collector
