- (continued from previous page)very often damp and contained many holes. The people there were not very careful about throwing out water and in many cases it was thrown into holds in the floor. Pigs too were sometimes fed in the kitchens and chickens & hens reared in them.
The people on the whole were so poor and yet so afraid of being thought rich that they considered that their neighbours might tell the landlord how well off they were if they built outoffices. Then, too, they were often afraid that the neighbours would over-look their animals & birds.
There was but one fireplace in the house - the open hearth in the kitchen. On this a good fire usually blazed when the turf was dry, and around it were stools of all sizes & shapes on which the people took a good heat of the fire. The chimney consisted of a hurdle which was made of seasoned scallops. Sometimes it was plastered on the outside with line putty.
